“Light” Reflections from San Antonio, Texas

I love light! The light of sunrise, sunset, bright sunshine, moonshine, candles, Christmas lights. Perhaps that is why my spirit engages whenever I think of Jesus’ declaration: “I Am the light of the world.”

I like bridges almost as much as I like light. This nighttime scene from our recent October getaway to San Antonio, Texas “fills my cup!”

In a few days we will transition from daylight savings time to regular time. I don’t look forward to the change since I tend to deal with mild but very real symptoms of seasonal affective disorder. It’s time, I figure, to bring out the full-spectrum light and plan the best way to spend 20 minutes at the beginning of each day sitting in front of it to help regulate my internal body clock, coaxing it to go ahead and boost some of those feel-good chemicals like serotonin.

I thought quite a bit about how much I am drawn to light during our recent getaway to San Antonio. While admiring beautiful lamp posts during a stroll along the famous Riverwalk, I began to ponder one of Jesus’ seven “I Am” statements, recorded in the Gospel of John, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 NIV)

Ron took several photos while we were in San Antonio which I feel are quite exquisite. In today’s post, I’d like to share several that focus on light. I hope you’ll enjoy.

The resort where we stayed was only a half block from the Riverwalk, and we made our way there every day. Beautiful lights shone at the Riverwalk, which was filled with a whole lot of activity at night.

One evening, we took a 2-hour Riverwalk boat dinner cruise. When he asked later, I told Ron to me this may have been the highlight of our week. The guacamole made with fresh squeezed orange juice was extraordinary; our guide was engaging; and floating lazily along the river was utterly peaceful.

One of those light posts that led me to ponder the “light of Jesus,” which has guided me through many dark days.

Horse-drawn Cinderella carriages magically light up the after-dark streets of downtown San Antonio.

The Saga, a laser-lightshow at the San Fernando Cathedral, which is the oldest church in San Antonio, was Ron’s favorite. The impressive, free, half-hour projection tells the history of San Antonio.

Significant figures in the history of San Antonio, which was established in 1691, is the seventh largest and one of the fastest growing cities in the United States.

Joshua Deets was an African American Texas Ranger.

President Lincoln who was instrumental in abolishing slavery, including slaves in Texas.

Thank you, San Antonio, for sharing your “big” Texas hospitality and rich history with this G’Ma and G’Pa from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho!

Thank you, readers, and blessings on your journeys, wherever they lead you!
