Our Grandson Meets “Lady Liberty”

Thanks for joining me today for a few grandma-memories of our recent exploration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I hope you will enjoy!

When we travel to a new location, I generally book at least one guided tour. Both Ron and I enjoy history, and a good tour guide is a treasure trove of historical information and anecdotal stories. As I think about a wide variety of tour guides throughout our years of travel, I remember a few who were excellent. Most did a good job, and there was only one who left a lingering stench!

Rob, our tour guide for the walking tour we scheduled for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island will rank among the excellent. He was passionate about the history of the Statue and his own family’s connection to Ellis Island. A professional actor and playwright, Rob brought a bit of drama to the tour, which was delightful.

Probably most importantly, Rob connected in a meaningful way with our 9-year-old grandson. Our Reeve, with his bright red hair, generous sprinkling of freckles, and blue, blue eyes with a mischievous sparkle, is a bright and inquisitive youngster who does not shy away from asking plenty of questions. Because our guide was so respectful and interested, I imagine Rob, a man Reeve will probably never meet again, left a lasting impression that will fuel our grandson’s ongoing curiosity about history.

Riding the subway to Battery Park where we met up with our Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island tour guide was part of Reeve’s first full-day NYC adventure!

Ahh! There she stands, a symbol of courage and hopeful new beginnings!

Reeve stands by the original torch. Damaged beyond repair, it was replaced in 1984.

The Statue is located on Liberty Island in upper New York Bay.

This photo of a mama and her six children arriving on Ellis Island felt extra significant to me. It’s possible the man to their right may have come before his family arrived. Some men worked several years to earn enough money to bring their family to the U.S.

Immigrant’s luggage in The Baggage Room speaks volumes!

Reeve reviews the city from the observation deck at Ellis Island.

The amazing NYC skyline.

I imagine God knew that Reeve—posing here next to his mom with his Statue of Liberty rubber duck—needed a mama like Sarah. Her gentleness, strength, wisdom, patience, and fierce love will encourage our high-spirited grandson to grow into the man God designed him to become.

Blessings on your journey, wherever it leads you!
