Discovering Movement in an Ancient Letter Transcendent Peace Exploring Philippians 4:4-9

Philippians 4:7 must be read within the context of verse 6, which instructs, Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Click here if you missed last Thursday’s post.

In earlier Listening on the Journey … posts, I referenced my friend Terry whose dire health circumstances give him, his lovely wife Nancy, and beloved family much to be “anxious about.” In a recent Facebook post, Terry revealed yet more cause for anxiety. (Note: If you are a prayer intercessor, please pray for Terry and his family.) 

Terry’s post caused much sadness in my soul and renewed my resolve to keep praying for him. But what touched me most deeply was his sincere declaration that despite troublesome medical news and an uncertain future, he is experiencing peace. I call this example of transcendent peace, I-don’t-get-it-but-I-know-it’s-real-peace.

As a follower of Jesus, there are certainly many aspects of my belief which transcends my human understanding, such as the power and value of prayer. I find great comfort in believing the God of Peace transcends my human understanding but is nevertheless very real.  

As I searched for one of my husband’s photographs that spoke to me of transcendent peace, I chose this lone tree on the Palouse. Ron took it a few weeks ago in the middle of summer. The wheat fields surrounding it have been harvested. Even though its branches are barren and lifeless, it remains standing simply and majestically.  

This tree reminds me of times when I have felt bleak; perhaps not understanding life’s circumstances; or perplexed about why my prayers seem unanswered. Yet, because of what Jesus accomplished, I am learning I can rest assured I will be given—right when I need it most—God’s I-don’t-get-it-but-I-know-it’s-real-peace.

Prayer

Dear Lord, 

I confess that I often feel anxious by your timing and methods. 

Yet, I am so grateful for your grace and mercy, which

Lead me to the mysterious, yet undeniable place of

Peace that transcends all understanding, and

Watches over my heart and mind.

Thank you, Jesus!
