Expressions of Devotion

Recently, Ron and I attended a memorial service for a longtime friend. Many who spoke, told about this very fine man’s deep love for Christ, which he lived out consistently and unobtrusively in kind, loving, practical ways. As I thought about this service afterward, I was reminded of a prayer and a sculpture, both of which were created out of deep devotion to Jesus. I hope you will ponder and appreciate …

Sculpture:

The Pietà, one of Michelangelo’s most revered sculptures, sits at the entrance of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. Ron captured this photo when we visited the Vatican in 2023.

Prayer:

Thanks be to you, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given to me, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for me. O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day.

This powerful expression of gratitude is attributed to Saint Richard of Chichester, who served as Bishop of the Anglican Cathedral of Chichester in West Sussex, England, from 1244 to 1253. It is believed to be his last prayer before his death.

Blessings to you and all those you love this day,
