Celebrating Freedom!
Today is Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States. A day to honor U. S. military who died in the line of service.
Memorial Day for many is also the “Opening Day of Summer.” This weekend I will plant fledgling flowers, and imagine the sweet, juicy tomatoes that will develop on those tiny tomato plants we place in the soil.
In our family, we will also celebrate the birth of our son-in-law! In fact, this is a photo I placed in a card for his birthday along with a portion of Scripture, reminding Brandon, who is a high achiever, that sometimes it’s not so much what we do, but simply that God carries us. (Exodus 19:4 says, “I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.”)
Happy Birthday, Brandon!
Peter Marshall, who served as Chaplain of the U. S. Senate from 1947 until his death in 1949, reminded citizens that freedom is not the “right to do as we please,” but it is an “opportunity to do what is right.”
Likewise, the Apostle Paul had a reminder about freedom which he delivered in a letter to early-church Christ followers. Paul said, “For freedom Christ has set us free;” and then he cautions, “stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (ESV)
Today, as we honor heroes who paid the ultimate price for our nation’s freedom as well as consider the price Jesus paid on the cross for our soul’s freedom, I hope you’ll join me in giving thanks and committing to walk well in the precious freedoms we enjoy.
Blessings on your journey,
